Why You Should Talk to Your Dentist About Your Anemia

There are a number of different reasons why a person might develop anemia, but the problem of having too few red blood cells. Those cells play an important function in the body, transporting oxygen. The shortage of oxygen reaching the various cells can cause a number of different symptoms to present, and this includes many issues that may arise in the mouth.

Gum Paleness

This is a big indicator of anemia, as it is often one of the most obvious signs of the condition. The lack of red blood cells can make the gums appear pale pink to almost white in color. If you notice a change in the color of your gums, you should discuss it with your dentist.

Increased Risk of Gum Disease

If you already know that you suffer from anemia, you should have a conversation with your dentist at your next scheduled appointment. The lack of oxygen to the gums can increase the risk of gum disease and periodontitis. These conditions are very serious and can even cause health problems elsewhere in the body.

Glossitis

This is a condition that impacts the tongue and is directly with anemia. It results in swelling of the tongue, which can make it hard to chew, swallow, and even speak. It can also be quite painful and could ultimately block the airway if allowed to progress.

Since there are different types of anemia, it is very important that you discuss this with your dentist. There may be steps that can be taken to prevent many of the common (and less common) complications of anemia, as they relate to dental health.
