Why Do You Have Persistent Bad Breath?

There are a number of reasons why a person can struggle to keep bad breath (also known as halitosis) at bay. The problem is one that can come from a wide variety of sources. The most obvious cause is diet.

Food

There are a number of foods that can cause a person to struggle with bad breath. The most typical of these are garlic and onions, but even that cup of coffee in the morning can cause problems. Large amounts of dairy, meat, and even fish can result in halitosis as well. If bad breath is a big problem for you, it is also a good idea to track how much acid you are consuming. High acid levels in the mouth can allow bacteria to grow faster and that can lead to bad breath. Examples of high-acid foods and beverages include tomatoes (and tomato-based products), lemons, limes, fruit juices, sodas, and pickled foods.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is also a major cause of bad breath. This can be linked to a medical problem, best treated by a dentist, but it can also be a direct impact of dietary- and life habits. Alcohol – beer, wine, or liquor – is known to dehydrate the body. Regular- or excessive consumption can result in persistent bad breath, as the dehydration occurs in the mouth as well.

Bacteria

Bacteria has already been mentioned above, but is worth mentioning again, as it can lead to a condition known as gum disease. In its earliest form is referred to as gingivitis, and it is a direct result of the same bacteria that cause cavities. Gum disease can cause many symptoms, but one of the most notable is severe halitosis.

Tobacco

Tobacco is another major cause of bad breath. Though it is difficult to quit, this bad habit is horrible for your mouth and your body. It irritates the gum tissue, increases the likelihood of gum disease, and creates severe halitosis in many cases.

There are also medical conditions that can result in persistent bad breath, including gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), diabetes, and kidney disease. Therefore, it is important to see a dental professional and your physician if it is difficult to manage your halitosis.
